I have experience working with children with a broad range of speech, language and communication needs aged 0-18 including late talkers, developmental language disorder, speech disorders, cleft palate, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), intellectual disability and global developmental delay. I believe in operating in a family centred manner so that therapy is most effective and fits in within the context of the family's life. I have a particular interest and experience working with children with complex needs including Autism Spectrum Disorder, intellectual disability and global developmental delay. When assessing a child, I look at their profile of strengths and needs so that the child experiences success and positive interactions. I have spent the last four years working as part of a multidisciplinary disability team, which has helped me understand a child's broader developmental needs as well as their communication needs. I think therapy should be fun so that the child enjoys the experience,  engages positively and learns new skills. Involving those central in the child's life, such as family and school is essential for the child to generalise their new skills and to empower those closest to support their communication development. I have completed postgraduate training to support children presenting with complex communication needs and to ensure therapy is evidence based and effective including:

Hanen More Than Words

DIR Floortime

LAMH

Picture Exchange Communication Scheme (PECS)

Derbyshire Language Scheme

Michael Palin Parent Child Interaction (PCI) for young children who stammer

ADOS-3 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-3)

Solution Focused Training

I offer assessment and intervention for the following:

  • Developmental language delay (late talkers)
  • Developmental language disorder (children who present with persistent difficulties understanding and using language)
  • Speech delay or disorder (limited speech sounds, unclear speech, errors making sounds)
  • Social communication difficulties (difficulty acquiring the language and nonverbal skills to communicate socially with family and friends)
  • Communication difficulties associated with a diagnosis of Autism, developmental delay, cleft palate or intellectual disability
  • Feeding, eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties
  •  Stammering

I have experience in training parents and teachers in different therapy methods and use a variety of evidence based interventions and tools to support your child's speech, language and communication development.
